Galloping Gazelles 2 vs 2 Hibernians Social Football Club

After the disappointment of the final few games of the previous season Hibs went into the first game of a new season not knowing anything about their opponent.  Unlike previous seasons, the old Sunday cliche of 'well, we know they're younger and fitter than us' doesn't apply so much these days with some younger faces around the team to complement the more experienced legs in Social.  Given the smaller dimensions of Queenstown we lined up with a 3-5-2 with the intention the middle 3 having one up behind the forwards.  Whether it was the shape or the general attitude we were on top from the start and must have forced around 7 or 8 corners in quick succession.  The opposition had to clear chance after chance off the line and somehow weathered the storm.  At the same time they showed that given the chance they were quick to go from back to front and were going to be dangerous on the attack.     New season but same old luck though and with the only attack the Gazelles had in the first half they managed to score.  Given the amount of possession and opportunity created by Social there wasn't any panic from the boys in black.  With the introduction of Max we introduced a bit more pace up front following Harvs domination of the front line earlier.  It didn't take too long to get level and from a free kick about 20 yards out and in the centre of the goal Max placed it deftly in the bottom left hand corner.  1-1 and no more than Hibs deserved at this point.   We were to get another excellent chance and this time from the penalty spot.  The Gazelle's defender had the ball bounce up awkwardly to him and hit his hand.  Everyone saw it, including the ref and with no on wanting to take the penalty it was up to Yours Truly.  Struck well enough but the keeper managed to pull off a Pickfordesque throwing a hand up mid-dive and put the ball over the bar.  All square going into the break.   Couple of changes at half time but Hibs were still confident of getting the win.  Gazelle came out a lot stronger in the second half and James had to pull off a couple of decent saves although mainly from speculative shots.  Chances came at the other end for Hakkan and again for Max.  However Hibs were hit with another sucker punch when, from a corner, the header hit the bar from James' save but then went over the line.  It did seem to provide a bit more impetus for Hibs and we then went to 3 up front.  Despite some really good build up play we couldn't find the breakthrough and the equaliser came from a contentious decision.  The keeper was adjudged to have held on to it for too long - I would have been upset had it been given against James.  At the same time I think Gazelle were lucky not to have conceded a penalty for the foul on Max.  So, indirect free kick in the box and after a quick dummy the ball was rolled to Max for him to float the ball out of the keeper's grasp.  Tremendously calm under pressure.   No real chances after that and the game ended all square.  I'm sure both teams probably felt they could have picked up the 3 points so it will be interesting to see how the return fixture plays out.     Best on the day for Hibs - Max had a great game, always dangerous, Harvs was causing all sorts of problems up front, JC showed some excellent touches in a crowded midfield and always seemed to be in the right position but MoM to James for some inspired keeping when we needed it.
