Singapore Football Club 3 vs 4 Singapore Vikings Football Club

Vikings plunder all 3 points SFC came off second best in their top of the table clash with Vikings. In a 7 goal thriller, SFC lost 4-3. Continuing to use their midweek fixtures as a sounding board for Saturdays, SFC rang the changes with their starting line up. Stars and Stripes debutants Dary Stone, Ross Macklin, and Kelly Williams all started. That was not enough, however, to stop a vibrant Vikings team who swept forwards on numerous occasions. The Scandinavians quickly went 1-0 up before SFC pulled one back through Matt McCole. The free-scoring Scot making it 4 goals in 4 outings. As the game went on, the contest saw some fierce tackling and robust challenges. Vikings established a commanding a 3-1 lead following a slew of SFC mistakes. Again SFC pulled one back this time through arabica aficionado, John Norfolk. 3-2. Vikings quickly reasserted themselves, however, to make it 4-2. A well-executed SFC third goal, by Dary Stone, gave SFC hope, but the earlier failings in defence proved too much to overhaul. Final score Vikings 4 SFC 3. The result brings SFC back down to earth after a successful outing on Saturday. Nevertheless, Rob Benson’s tireless running out wide, was ever present; strong showings from Danny Sheen and Ross Macklin will also have pleased Head Coach Owen Monaghan. Dary Stone and Matthew Vernon Zatto also combined well for some fantastic interplay and overlaps down the flanks. Best wishes to Heiko Moeller (SFC) for a speedy recovery after a nasty clash during the game. All eyes now turn to Saturday, when SFC have two fixtures.

The two top teams went head to head in this midweek fixture and served up a hard fought feast of football. Both teams went hammer and tong to secure the points with Vikings finally getting over the line with a 4-3 victory. The pace all night was ferocious and the referee certainly had it work cut out as both sides were fully committed in the tackle. Vikings took the lead after good work from young Busser saw him regain possession down the right and his quality ball into the box was met by perfectly by TJ and his well-timed volley went beyond the keeper and into the net. The lead was short lived as SFC pressed hard and this was rewarded with an equaliser after some good interplay and calm finish. There were big chances at both ends with Dubsky hitting the bar twice in a matter of minutes. Vikings lead was restored when more good work down the the from Jules resulted in him pulling it back for debutant Jan who slotted the ball past the keeper.  Within minutes of the restart Vikings carved out a couple of good openings but the score remained the same. Tackles continued to fly in from both sides along with some fine fluent football. Vikings went further ahead when Meli, a thorn in the side of SFC all night, went on a mazey run only to be bought down from a heavy challenge on the edge of the box - he got to his feet and smashed the resulting free kick high into the top corner to score a goal that he richly deserved. SFC looked out of it on 60min when ‘ Dra9shak’ wriggled his heavy frame forward and calmly beat the keeper. 4-1 the score with 20 min left. Vikings legs started to look heavy and a combination of a small bench and some players donning summer excesses did not bode well for the final quarter! MOM Tomas had to leave the pitch, as did Capt Casper, in readiness for our Cosmo seasons opener on Saturday. All this resulted in Vikings come under increasing pressure, SFCgrabbed a second when a good ball into the 6 yard box was met sweetly by a on-rushing player and the arrears were reduced. Better things were to follow for the league new boys when their striker turned beautifully and blasted beyond Riber. The final 7 min became nervous for Vikings but they managed to hang on and extend their lead at the top of the league. Thanks to SFC for a highly competitive game and to the referee who needed eyes in the back of his head. Thanks to all of the Vikings who played and supported - we know what we need to do to be successful this year, now let’s do it.
