Centaurs Turf City Pitch

Singapore Football Club 3 vs 2 Purple Monkeys Midweek Football Club

It was raining goals at Turf City on Wednesday evening, during a night of high drama, in the ESPZEN League.   On Centaurs Pitch Singapore Football Club battled past Purple Monkeys, to win 3-2.    Meanwhile, down at The Cage, Vikings FC won a 12-goal fiesta with Spanish World Having sprinted to a rapid   7-0 lead after just 30 minutes, the Scandinavians finally settling for an 8-4 win and in the process blowing the top of the table wide open.   In their own game, Singapore Football Club initially took a 1-0 lead through their player-manager, for the night, Robert Eziakor. The Nigerian hitman finding the back of the net with a well-placed low shot. Having enjoyed a significant amount of possession SFC started to take their foot off the gas, as PMFC began to settle.   The early goal appeared to sting Purple Monkeys into action. Their hard-working midfield began to create some openings and eventually, they were rewarded with two, well-taken, goals. The first, in particular, being finished with excellent precision, as Purple Monkeys went in at half time with a 2-1 lead.    A rousing team talk and a small tactical shift by Clipboard King, Eziakor, soon saw SFC regain their composure - as well as much more of the ball. A francophone midfield of Dashnyam, Mbeutcha, and Walter soon had SFC creating numerous opportunities, as they started to dominate once again.   Eventually, SFC’s man of the moment, Tim Walter, stepped up to bring the scores level. The Swiss starlet finishing with a twenty-yard rasper to make it level at 2-2. His latest goal making it 8 goals in his last 7 games   As the game wore on into the final quarter SFC continued to create opportunities, whilst at the back Simon Lloyd and Jahan Rezai successfully snuffed out any Purple Monkeys threat - although not before a Purple shirted shot had hit the woodwork.   With ten minutes to go, Saatwik Kaul, finally decided to make his mark on the game. The tardy teenage sensation put through an exquisite pinpoint pass to Nick Marsh. The Englishman without hesitation latched on to the ball and, with a right-foot finish, he buried the ball neatly into the bottom corner. Final score 3-2 SFC.   In the post-match conference, an ecstatic Eziakor was full of praise for the focus and fight his young team had shown. “To battle back and eventually seal all 3 points, just shows what we are made of. This team never knows when it is beaten. Never. At half time we all agreed we had to win this game for our Coach, Ross Macklin. Get well soon Macca.”   Thank you PMFC for a hard, but fairly fought contest. Best of luck with your remaining games.   Man of the Match: Tim Walter

Unfamiliar territory for MPMFC.  SFC started the match quite strongly, taking their time and building patiently from the back.  If I was to guess, SFC had 90% of the possession in those first 10 minutes.  And as per the MPMFC script, we found ourselves 1-0 down after a scramble in the box and a neat finish by SFC midfielder.  We didn’t have to wait long before we levelled with a strong contender for the goal of the season across all of the PMFC teams.  A dangerous cross was headed away by the SFC defence, with the ball in a looping arc falling towards about 25m away from goal.  Up stepped Ivan and with a first-time volley, smashed the ball into the top corner which the keeper even in a full dive couldn’t stop.    Precision, power, vision and from out of nowhere - No wonder Ivan is referred to in the team as the Surgician.  It was at this stage of the match we started getting more of the ball, with the midfield trio of Cosmo Harry , Joe and Jamie getting more of the ball in midfield.  That same partnership gave us our second of the night, with Jamie playing in an absolute peach of a ball to Harry who managed to get in behind the defence and tap the ball past the onrushing keeper.  Classy pass, classy finish.  With 2-1 up we went into the HT break finding ourselves in unfamiliar territory of being in the lead and playing good football across the entire team.  The second half started along the same lines as the first with SFC having more of the ball and possession.  Midway through and a skilful strike (with a bit of luck avoiding the sea of players in front) from about 20m out levelled the score.  Not long after, SFC scored their third and final goal of the night.  We still had the chances and time to equalise.  Borja come close with a strike from the edge that narrowly went by the post and Ivan unluckily missed the empty net and hit the crossbar after a difficult and deflected ball somehow found its way to his feet.  Devastated at the end, but a lot of positives from this game.  Even though we conceded 3 goals, we held tight at the back (Engi, Lynas, Aki and Greg doing an amazing job).  The rotating midfield of Joe, Harry, Ivan, Borja, Phil and Victor ran its guts out holding back the SFC roaming midfielders and causing a lot of problems to the SFC defence with their probing passes.  And JG and particularly Jamie up front caused all sorts of issues to the SFC defence.  MOM goes to someone in midfield this time round, with Joe narrowly beating Harry (Only cause he is older) with his ball distribution and diligent defensive duties.  Best of luck to SFC in their title run, was a real pleasure to play against.
