Centaurs Turf City Pitch

Vikings Vets Football Club 1 vs 1 Real Ale Madrid Football Club

Spoils Even! After weeks of waiting Singapore Vikings were eager to get back out on the green stuff and make a positive start to the defence of the title they won convincingly last season. Standing in the way for the curtain raiser was our old friends Real Ale. The game had been put back to a 5pm kick-off but this proved to reward little respite from the baking hot sun which graced the massive Centaurs pitch. Vikings started with their well-rehearsed 4-5-1 number and maintained possession quite comfortably without fashioning anything but a half chance within the opening passages of play. Real Ale, who had been hard pushed for numbers, started to get a foothold in the game and began to ask questions of the Viking line-up; a good strong run by their troublesome number 9 resulted in a fierce shot which Rene did well to parry out for a corner. Play went backwards and forwards, the wide open spaces on the pitch were being exploited by both teams but without any real end product. Around the 25 min mark Real Ale won another corner which was initially cleared - they regained possession on the right side and a deep ball into our box saw a great header find its way into the net! 1-0 Real and nothing more than they deserved. Unfortunately for them their lead was short lived as Madsen levelled the tie with a turn inside the box and neat finish. The game played out to half time and both teams came in level. The second half proved to be much the same as the first only no further goals were dispatched by either team. Vikings looked a little livelier in the second period but there were also times where Real Ale broke through the centre and posed a number of problems with their positive running. Both teams huffed and puffed and tried their best to get the three points but a combination of temperature, fitness, size of pitch and some good defending by both defences ensured the shares were even. Real Ale certainly seemed the happier of the two teams when the referee blew for the final whistle and it is fair to say that Vikings did not do enough to win the game and a draw seemed like the only fair outcome. Thanks to our opponents who certainly showed up and look like they will have something to say in the league this year and to the referee who allowed the game to flow. For Vikings, we must make sure that we regain that killer instinct and it’s imperative that we are ready for the stiff test that TGA will bring next time out!

Tight, sporting competitive game with Vikings. Both teams struggled with the size of the pitch. Paul opened the scoring with a great header from a searching cross from Jim. Vikings levelled with a scrappy finish from a corner.
